Each of us can invent and reinvent ourselves through memory, although perhaps, deep down, we still fear the darkness sur- rounding it. A tiger, Borges’ favourite symbol, as powerful and fascinating as memory itself, perhaps awaits us there. But it will be a “tiger of tenderness”.
